Free Businss Strategy Lesson for Funeral Managers

By Hep | June 20, 2008

If you liked the discussion with Dr. Kevin Hindle and Nevin Mann, but just don’t know where to start, I have been able to pull in another favor. Join me and Brent Mainprize, Ph.D., as we walk you through step by step how to perform a strategic analysis on your company.

Unfortunately, the training that we funeral directors receive from mortuary school doesn’t teach us to be funeral strategists. I found myself in the same position, but in our market - high cremation, highly competitive market with discounters and memorial societies - I felt that I needed some business strategy education right away. So I went back to university and received my business degree in Entrepreneurial Management. The greatest skill that I learned in the entire program was how to use some Strategic Analysis Tools. Instead of you having to go back to university for an MBA, I want to share with you these tools and how they can be applied to your own funeral operations in your own market.

Dr. Mainprize holds a Doctorate in Entrepreneurship, is an internationally renowned professor who lectures to business owners about the strength of their business model and will share with you what strategies you can use to separate you from your competitors.

During this teleseminar you will learn how to apply these 3 KEY ANALYSIS tools to take you from a high overview look at factors that affect our industry and your market and then laser-focus in on your firm and start to differentiate you from your competition.

We will demonstrate to you how to apply the following business analysis tools to the funeral industry:

  1. PEDST Analysis to look at external factors: Political, Economic, Demographic, Social, and Technological
  2. Five Forces of Competition analyzes: Power of Buyers, Power of Suppliers, Threat of New Entrants, Threat of Substitutes, and Competitive Rivalry (you vs. the funeral home down the street)
  3. SWOT Analysis will look internally at your: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

Then you will have all you need to leap ahead of your competition.

Very informative. I particullary liked the discussion about getting back to “Undertaking” and saying yes to request. I have been in funeral service for 34 years and see the difference. The new FD’s coming into this field are not as concerned about pleasing the customer as they are about getting their paychecks regularly.

As a second generation, african-american, funeral director, I found this program to be eye-opening.

I’ve oftened wondered about the importance of establishing a business plan for our home since our 100K pop. consist of 90% WASP and 10% AA. We avg. 45 calls/yr.

Today’s program revealed that we must establish a plan in order to not only compete, but to flourish in the profession we’ve chosen.

I look forward to receiving some of your notes, as I came in about 15 minutes after the telecast start.

Thank you for teaching us how to fish.

    Regards,
    Cedric

    Good morning Rob
Thank you for the presentation. As a owner of a Funeral Home in a small town I truly understand the word “Undertaker” The families we serve count on us to walk them through all aspect of Funeral Care. We also can’t forget the technical part of our profession because that is what separates us from the Golf Courses and Halls.

    Rob,

Great presentation. Thanks for making it available as a download. I think your suggestion for making it a summer project to do the environmental scan, competive forces and SWOT analysis with my staff a must do. I just need to put a big white board up in the break room so maybe people will be motivated to do this on their own without the boss making them.
