If you answered YES to one or more of these questions,
and if you want to EASILY TRACK your competitive market...especially in these challenging times in
funeral service, you need to continue reading this letter...

Dear Fellow Funeral Professional,

I have some important questions for you. Think carefully as you answer...

  • If you wanted to increase your market share and overall revenue, wouldn't it be smart to target the funeral homes that are serving the most profitable calls?

  • Would it be advantageous to you to know that a competitor was really hurting financially, especially if most of their business were immediates?

  • Would it be important to you to know if a competitor was gaining ground on your most profitable services?

  • Are you tired of trying to track Market Share in a notebook...and then manually having to calculate the totals and percentages?

  • Would the future of your business be brighter if you had a strategic outlook and plan for your continued success?

If you answered "YES" any of these questions, then I have some important news for you...

The news is you are NOT alone.

In fact, that is a list of questions that I have been asked by funeral professionals throughout North America.

It is a fact that the funeral industry is very competitive in many markets. And in some markets the corporately owned funeral homes are gaining more market share - especially with the most profitable services. They have business strategists, financial analysts and competitive tracking tools that help zero in on those profitable services. Other funeral homes that don't have the benefit of those analysts and tools could slowly see their market share ERODE right before their eyes.

Funeral Homes struggle with Market Share because...

  • In the past, we used to be able to track CALLS only because all services were pretty well the same, but if you did that today, you could be chasing the low profit calls
  • Today, there are so many different service choices, you need to know which CALLS and which COMPETITORS to focus on

  • Even within your own company you may be focusing on calls instead of SERVICE MIX

  • They base future decisions like expansion on WEAK analytical data - again focusing on the CALLS and not the DOLLARS

So how do you track your market share in CALLS, SERVICE MIX, and REVENUES, without hiring an accountant or becoming ANOTHER burden on YOU or YOUR MANAGERS?

I had the same question, and especially in my home market of Victoria, BC, where it was a highly competitive market with 2 corporate competitors - one of which was a discount provider, plus another independent discounter and not mention two Memorial Societies. And if that wasn't enough, the cremation rate was over 85% (now it is 92%)!

Knowing that we had to be very strategic in future decisions, we knew we not only needed to track calls, but revenues as well so that we could zero in on the most profitable calls - not just the number of calls.

This is when I drew on what I learned while earning my business degree - especially in the Financial Management course. You see, during that course I learned some skills that I didn't know that would be so valuable in the future - those skills were how to use (and push to its limits) Microsoft Excel.

At University they didn't teach me how to apply Excel to Funeral Service, that is something that I had to figure out on my own - always asking the question, "I wonder if I could get Excel to track (this - insert idea)?"

I created an Excel Spreadsheet that tracked calls and also estimated revenues of each firm - all by just entering the deceased's name in the appropriate column. Thus, the Competition Tracker was born. It automatically totals the number of calls, estimates the overall revenues and produces Pie Charts so you can see where you stand at a glance!

Funeral Competition

The story continues as I recently was challenged by Scott Meierhoffer from Missouri to incorporate the tracking of Service Mix. A challenge a little more difficult than it sounds - especially since different funeral homes want to track different service types. But I met the challenge by incorporating up to 6 different service types versus up to 6 different competitors. And now the Competition & Mix Tracker was created!

One of the outcomes of this new and improved version is that it calculates your own Service Mix as well - and compares those particular service types to all of the competitors.

If you are new to Excel or haven't applied its power to funeral service, here is a FREE tool called the "Revenue Per Call" that takes your fixed costs and variable costs and calculates your revenue per call. You can also use this calculator so that you know...and you can demonstrate to your staff...how much losing 1 price shopper hurts the firm, and the more painful impact of losing 1 per month over the course of 1 year!

"Best tool [Revenue Per Call Calculator] I have seen in years… I am sending this out to every Funeral Director I know… Great tool to use at staff meetings to express to the employees how much every call matters and directly effects the funeral home profitability and more so their pay!"
. . . Bryan Chandler

Why would I sell the Competition & Mix Tracker for such a bargain?

Let's call it Hepp's Leverage...

I am one of the few if not the only funeral consultant that not only has expertise in business strategy and when coupled with the technical knowledge and necessary resources to deliver products and services in an online environment - it would be cost prohibitive for the others to even attempt it, without making you pay substantially more.

P.S. Unfortunately a few funeral home managers will continue to use old methods of tracking competition, or worse, say "My market is different" and be unaware that their market share is slowly slipping away.
